Simon has been advising captives since 1981 through client service roles as an insurance broker specialising in international energy business. After graduating from Oxford University with an honours degree in Classics he worked at Seascope Insurance Services until 1987 when he became a founding member of London broker Newman Martin and Buchan LLP. He formed Palm in 2007 in order to address the absence of independent underwriting services for captives in Barbados and opened Palm’s London office in 2014. His specialities are policy design and pricing, and new product development.
Valerie has just stepped down from her role as President of Iridium Risk Services Inc. in Calgary, an independent brokerage dedicated to providing risk management and insurance advice to energy companies. Through her work as a claims expert and broker for the past 20 years, Valerie has developed relationships with key insurance underwriting and claims personnel, and has developed a particular expertise within the Directors’ & Officers’ Liability underwriting and claims spheres. These relationships will be valuable to Palm Canada clients as Valerie now focuses her efforts on assisting clients and brokers to obtain the best insurance programmes available in the market.
Valerie has a law degree and background that will assist her in expanding the suite of products offered by Palm Canada to assist clients in all areas of financial protection.
Mark recently retired after 17 years at Nexen Energy ULC in Calgary where he was the Director, Risk Management and Insurance. He is now working with Palm Captive Consultants providing support and advice primarily to captive owners with Canadian parents in Barbados and BC. Previous roles include risk manager at Husky Energy and as an underwriter and broker. Providing captive advisory services is a logical extension of the hands on work Mark had in setting up and advising on operations for the Nexen captive. Mark also served for many years on the captive board.
Mark has over 30+ experience in the risk and insurance professions. He is involved as a board member on The William H. McGannon Foundation. In his previous roles, he has held professional positions as a director for ICM Assurance (Barbados) and the advisory board of Mount Royal University. He has sat on a number of insurer advisory panels including OCIL, Swiss Re and AIG Canada.
